Interesting podcast episode about DEFIANCE from Dr. Becky Kennedy today!

In summary: There are two common types of children—and you may have both living in your home (as I do!). The compliant child, most commonly the eldest, is the obedient one who follows the rules and does as they are told. Then there is the defiant child, many times the second or third in the lineup, who is stubbornly independent, questions authority, and often disregards rules.

It left me wondering…

Why is it that we applaud and commend obedience and compliance in our children (“just listen, follow rules, do as you’re told!”), yet as adults these qualities are not always the ones that lead to the highest success?

The leaders in society are the individuals who question authority, oppose the status quo, and are risk takers. I continue to wonder how we can strengthen our children to think for themselves—to be strong-minded, independent thinkers; individuals who can use their intuitions, senses, and minds to reach their highest goals and achievements.

People who can essentially create pivotal change in the world… but who can also make their beds, brush their teeth, and follow the rules in school.

Any ideas? :)
